Copy your competitor's backlinks (the right way)

Hey Reader,

Ever wonder why your competitor ranks #1 while your (objectively better) content is stuck on page 2?

9 times out of 10, it’s their backlink profile.

Today, I’m going to show you the exact process we use to analyze and replicate competitor backlinks.

No guesswork, no “maybes” - just pure data-driven link building.

Why Most Backlink Analysis Fails

Here’s what most people do:

  1. Check competitor backlinks in Ahrefs
  2. Try to get the same links
  3. Fail miserably
  4. Blame the tool

Here’s what you SHOULD do instead:

1. The Scientific Backlink Audit

First, we need clean data. Here’s your process:

  1. Export ALL competitor backlinks
  2. Remove the garbage:
    • Links with zero organic traffic
    • Web 2.0 sites
    • Forum profiles
    • Link farms
    • Directory listings
    • Anything that looks spammy

Now you have their REAL backlink profile.

2. The Link Distribution Analysis

Create a spreadsheet tracking:

  • % of links to homepage
  • % of links to blog posts
  • % of links to money pages (product/service)

Real example from a SaaS client’s competitor:

  • Homepage: 35%
  • Blog content: 45%
  • Product pages: 20%

This is your blueprint. If you want to outrank them, your link distribution should match or beat these numbers.

3. The Anchor Text Deep-Dive

Here’s something most people overlook:

Looking at your competitor’s anchor text split gives you a proven template to follow.

While you don’t need to match it exactly, it shows you what’s working in your niche.

Example anchor text split from a ranking site:

  • Brand name: 40%
  • Generic (“click here”, “read more”): 30%
  • Partial match (“SEO guide”, “link building tips”): 20%
  • Exact match (“best SEO software”): 10%

Using a similar distribution is a safe, proven approach. Think of it as following a working recipe - you can adjust the ingredients, but the basic proportions work.

4. The Link Type Analysis

Not all links are created equal. Breaking down their link sources shows you exactly what kind of link building actually works in your niche.

Here’s what this might look like:

  • Guest posts
  • Digital PR mentions
  • Product reviews
  • Resource page links
  • Niche edits

The exact split doesn’t matter as much as making sure you’re getting the same TYPES of links as your competitors. If they’re ranking well with this mix, it’s a proven formula for your niche.

5. The Gap Analysis

Simple math time:

Let’s say:

  • You have: 50 quality links
  • Competitor has: 150 quality links
  • Gap: 100 links

To catch up in 12 months, you need:

  • 8-9 new links per month
  • Split according to the ratios above
  • ~3 guest posts
  • ~2 PR mentions
  • ~2 product reviews
  • ~1 resource link

6. The Action Plan

Now for the execution. Here’s how to get each link type:

Guest Posts Use this exact pitch:

“Hey [name],

Love your article about [topic].

I’m writing guest posts about [their topic] and noticed you accept contributors.

I’ll write you a 2,000-word post targeting ANY keyword you want. Just need one contextual link to our relevant guide.

Here are 3 samples: [link]”

Success rate: About 15-20% with this approach.

Digital PR

  • Sign up for Featured
  • Create original research/data
  • Write expert pitches
  • Focus on your expertise only

Product Reviews

  • Find bloggers reviewing competitors
  • Offer free product/account
  • Plus small payment if needed
  • Be upfront about wanting a review

Resource Links

  • Find resource pages in your niche
  • Actually check if you’re relevant
  • Pitch value, not just “add my link”

Bottom Line

Stop guessing why competitors outrank you.

  1. Analyze their link profile
  2. Break down the numbers
  3. Copy their ratios
  4. Execute systematically

The best part? This approach is basically copy-paste SEO.

You’re not reinventing the wheel - you’re just methodically replicating what’s already working.

Get to work,

- Nick
